The Best Targets on La Brea, Ranked

Remember way back when there was only one Target on La Brea? My, how times have changed. In the last 10 years, the mighty Los Angeles thoroughfare that is La Brea Avenue has seen some significant development — including increased housing, new restaurants, an awesome brewery, and, yes, a few extra Targets.

There are no fewer than three Targets on La Brea at the time of this posting. And for the sake of this rundown, we are going to include the Target on Hollywood, which is a short walk from La Brea.

So of the four Targets eligible, which is the best Target on La Brea?

Let’s dive in.

The Best Target on La Brea

This may not come as a shock, but there’s really only one Target on La Brea that will get you everything you need when it’s crunch time. Whether you’re shopping for back-to-school items, gifts for any occasion, holiday decorations, a completely new wardrobe, baby stuff, groceries, cosmetics, toys, sports equipment, and just about anything else, the West Hollywood Target is by far the best Target on La Brea.

Distantly in second place is the LA Mid City Target, which we’ve affectionately nicknamed “Tiny Target.” In third place is the Hollywood Galaxy Target (are we really calling it that?) — and this is the one that shouldn’t be on the list because it’s technically not a Target on La Brea, but it’s close enough. And coming in last place is the La Brea & 4th Street Target, which may be debatable, but we have some strong feelings about why we’ve ranked it last.

We’ll get into why we have ranked these Targets on La Brea in a moment but for anyone keeping score, here’s the rundown:

  1. West Hollywood Target
  2. LA Mid City Target (a.k.a. “Tiny Target”)
  3. Hollywood Galaxy Target
  4. La Brea & 4th Street Target

#1 West Hollywood Target

The West Hollywood Target on La Brea is the biggest store on La Brea

7100 Santa Monica Blvd, STE 201, West Hollywood, CA 90046

Phone: 323-603-0004

Of this bunch, the West Hollywood Target is the longest-standing Target on La Brea, and the other three Targets can sort of be seen as satellites of this Target. This is the big mama, the main cheese, the father of the pride when it comes to La Brea Targets. And this is because the West Hollywood Target is roughly the size of the Titanic.

Standing on top of Best Buy and extending all the way to Santa Monica Blvd., the West Hollywood Target has everything you’d expect to find at a Target with lots and lots of inventory. This mega Target also includes a CVS Pharmacy, fresh groceries (including wine, beer, and the hard stuff), a cell phone activation counter, and a Starbucks.

Parking at the West Hollywood Target

There is street parking on La Brea, but don’t bother with that because there’s no such thing as a quick pop-in if you’re visiting the West Hollywood Target. Also, there are really only a few hours a day you can park at a meter, so you could risk getting towed if you’re not careful.

Instead, access Romaine Street from either La Brea or Formosa and enter the underground parking structure on the south side of Target. There is generally plenty of parking, and parking is free for the first hour.

Head to the elevators and take an elevator all the way up to level #2 (the Target level) and prepare to get lost in a wonderful realm of retail. Be careful because there are two exits from the service-size elevator. You want to go out the same side you came in — unless you are there for returns or you need to make a beeline for customer service for whatever reason. There used to be a Starbucks and a Pizza Hut inside this Target. The Pizza Hut is no more. There is a Starbucks just outside and down the escalator.

And we might be imagining this, but the big red shopping carts supplied right at the entrance seem a little bigger than you’d find elsewhere. Depending on your needs, that can be a good thing.

#2 LA Mid City Target (“Tiny Target”)

The Mid City Target on La Brea and San Vicente

1302 S. La Brea Ave, Ste A, Los Angeles, CA 90019

Phone: 323-801-0965

Like the Target on La Brea up the street at 4th Street, this is a small Target or a “City Target,” which we believe is a misnomer because when we think of a city, we expect it to be BIG. The major difference between Tiny Target in Mid City and the one further north is the selection of inventory and, maybe more importantly, the convenience factor. This is where we take the girls to pick up candy when we need to sneak some sweets into the movie theater at The Grove.

This Target has a selection of clothes and apparel, shoes, toys, baby stuff, and a decent selection of fresh and packaged groceries (including candy). There are a couple of registered manned by live Target employees, but you’ll never need to wait for a self check-out station.

Parking at LA Mid City Target

You can generally find parking on La Brea right outside the entrance, and there are no meters to pay. Otherwise, there is underground parking with an entrance to the south right off La Brea and rooftop parking around the corner with an entrance on San Vicente. There is a guard gate / pay kiosk at the top of the ramp, but we don’t think they actually charge for parking. It doesn’t really matter because we always find an open spot on La Brea.

#3 Hollywood Galaxy Target

The Hollywood Galaxy La Brea in the heart of Hollywood

7021 Hollywood Blvd, #210, Los Angeles, CA 90028

Phone: 213-588-7106

We’re going to be honest, here — this Target could be a close second after the West Hollywood Target. The major points against the Hollywood Galaxy Target not being the second-best Target on La Brea is the technicality of it not actually being on La Brea and that you need to be mentally prepared to deal with all of the tourists outside of it. That said, since it’s so close to La Brea and you can see La Brea from the sidewalk, we’re including it on our list.

This out-of-this-world Target is a total anomaly. It’s a Target, yeah, and it has all the things you expect a Target to have, but it’s also way different and unique in many ways. It’s got two levels, which may not be all that crazy, but I have come to expect my Targets to be one level. It’s also in the heart of the Hollywood tourist traffic. There is a Starbucks in this Target — the only existing Target on La Brea (or near La Brea) that still includes a Starbucks — but it’s tucked away on the bottom level.

Parking at Hollywood Galaxy Target

You likely won’t be able to park out front because all of the tour buses are parked there, and parking in the neighborhood is permit-only for the most part. There is parking underneath, which is shared with CVS and LA Fitness. Access to the parking structure is off Sycamore and be warned — you get the first hour of parking at this Target for free with a purchase. When you check out, you’ll get two receipts, and the second receipt is the parking validation. Don’t leave without that second receipt or that quick trip to Target for diapers or school supplies will fetch you an extra $20.

#4 LA LaBrea and 4th Street Target

The La Brea and 4th Street Target

Do you remember way back when you were young and there was that Nintendo game that you had your heart set on? You’d save your allowance for weeks and do extra chores around the house for extra money and then finally your mom or dad would finally be available to drive you to Toys R Us, and when you got to Toys R Us and went to the Nintendo game section, they would be SOLD OUT of the one game you wanted?

Well, that’s how we feel about the La Brea and 4th Street Target.

The handful of times we have been to this target, we were not able to find the one thing that we wanted. There are plenty of clothes, gifts, electronics, toys, and baby stuff as you would expect to find at a City Target, but for whatever reason, and maybe it’s just us, we are never able to get the one item we actually needed. And it’s no fun to settle for something else — trust us, that kid looking for the Nintendo game understands this.

Maybe we’re being too hard on this Target. To be honest, because of the gobs of tourists in Hollywood, this Target (actually on La Brea) would have been ranked higher, but it looks to be currently undergoing renovations and there was even less stuff on the shelves. There is a grocery section at this Target (we were able to get jalepenos, which we forgot to pick up at Trader Joe’s a few blocks north), but overall the entire experience is kind of meh except that it’s super easy to find parking.

If it’s the middle of the day, you might get lucky and grab a parking meter right outside on La Brea. There is parking on top of the building as well, which is free. Like the Mid City Target, parking is actually pretty convenient here.
