Comedy Night Out at Dynasty Typewriter
Laughter is the fountain of youth, right? So why not reduce some stress, release some endorphins, and remember that life can be ridiculously funny? Los Angeles is swimming with talented comedians, and there are great shows pretty much every night. We absolutely love Dynasty Typewriter at the Hayworth Theater in Los Angeles.
Dynasty Typewriter showcases its fair share of A-listers in addition to a growing list of amazing indie talent — and did we mention they have air conditioning? Show up for the headliner and fall in love with the other acts during the (on average) two full hours of comedy.
And if you’re lucky, you might get a celebrity drop-in!
Tickets for Comedy at Dynasty Typewriter
It’s generally a good idea to buy your tickets in advance because popular features do sell out. That said, we bought our most recent Sarah Silverman tickets on the morning of the Saturday night show. Tickets are generally around $25, and you may be able to score a deal every so often or grab one of the lower-priced tickets reserved for those who are really on a budget but want to see great comedy too.
We follow Dynasty Typewriter on social media and look up their calendar every so often when we have a free weekend night. The prices are very reasonable for a night out. If you are really on a budget, there are often free comedy shows in Los Angeles along with several open mics. Check your local listings.
Getting to the Hayworth Theater
We usually drive and have always been able to find street parking. However, the Hayworth highly recommends taking a ride-share app — especially if you’re thinking of having an adult beverage or two.
Street Parking
The best bets for street and metered parking in the neighborhood are on Wilshire Boulevard, Carondelet Street, Park View Street, Coronado Street, and 6th Street. Be sure to check all signs for parking regulations.
Parking Lots
There are several lots within walking distance of the venue. Their main lot is located around the corner at 611 S Carondelet Street and is $12.
What to Bring to Dynasty Typewriter
The theater is cold, so no matter how hot it is, bring a layer or two. It’s a theater with concessions, so they offer snacks, soft drinks, and alcoholic beverages for your consumption. They serve DynaPop popcorn, which — according to management — was voted “Best Popcorn on the West Coast” by Popcorn Magazine.
We always arrive when doors open so we can get a good seat. If you pay attention to the previews, they sometimes have offers for free tickets during the week. Get em!
Other Things To Note
The comedy at Dynasty Typewriter is always good. And even when it’s not fall-out-of-your-seat funny, it’s still an enjoyable night and well worth the $25 ticket. It’s great for a night out with a group of friends or a date night.
Mike O’Brien was one of the draws to our last outing. He was a member of Saturday Night Live for a spell, one of the writers of the movie Sword of Trust with the late Lynn Shelton, and he had an amazing Youtube show called Seven Minutes in Heaven where he interviewed celebrity guests in a closet.
A Few Comedy Clubs We Love
The Upright Citizens Brigade. Founded by Amy Poehler, Matt Besser, Ian Roberts, and Matt Walsh, this is a great place to wet your feet in the improv world. Shows range from anywhere from free to $20, and they can be hit or miss. But many notable comics have started out here. The UCB also offers improv classes if you’re feeling adventurous or just want to step out of your comfort zone and have a great time (and meet new people). With its flagship Silverlake location cooking after so many years and up to three shows a night, you are bound to find something to suit your fancy.
Largo at the Coronet. A happening music and comedy venue. The guests are always A-list and relevant though the tickets are a bit on the pricier end. Judd Apatow, Beck, Nick Kroll, Pete Holmes, and Marc Maron are regulars here.
Groundlings. Another great place to see a top-shelf improv show. You can watch the main company, and on occasion, famous alumni come through. Tickets are reasonably priced and they have shows nightly. Loraine Newaman, Phil Hartman, Melissa McCarthy and Kristin Wiig all came from Groundlings. Paul Reubens was a member in the 70’s-80’s and his iconic character PeeWee Herman originated from his tenure there.
The Hollywood Improv. If you want to see a mainstream comedy show in Hollywood, we like the Hollywood Improv. With lots of headliner acts to choose from you are bound to find a featured comedian you recognize. Tickets are around $35 and there is usually a 2-drink minimum. If you choose to sit near the stage be prepared to participate in some crowd work.
